What is the Luminous Lagoon?

The Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon in Falmouth, Trelawny is one of the rarest natural phenomena on earth. Tiny single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates live in the water in extraordinarily high concentrations. When disturbed β€” by a boat, a paddle, or a swimmer β€” they emit a brief but brilliant blue-green light.

The effect is magical. Every movement through the water traces a glowing path. Fish dart through leaving bright streaks. Swimming in it feels like being in a natural light show. Photos barely do it justice β€” it's something you need to experience in person.

There are only four bioluminescent bays in the world with strong enough concentrations to be clearly visible: two in Puerto Rico, one in the Maldives, and this one in Falmouth, Jamaica. This is the only one where you can swim directly in the glowing water.

Lift Taxi can collect you from Montego Bay hotels (~30 min drive) or you meet at the lagoon dock in Falmouth. Perfect add-on for cruise passengers already in Falmouth.

β›΅
Glass-bottom boat ride

A small boat takes you out to the centre of the lagoon. As the boat glides through the water, you'll see glowing trails beneath you through the glass bottom β€” even before you get in.

✨
Swimming in the glow

You slip into the warm water and every movement creates a trail of cold blue-green light. Swipe your hand through the water and it glows. Float on your back and watch the light swirl around you. About 30–45 minutes in the water.

Optional dinner nearby

Falmouth has good seafood restaurants a few minutes from the lagoon. Many guests combine the lagoon with a dinner out. Tell Lift Taxi in advance and he'll book a table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is swimming mandatory or can I just watch from the boat?

Swimming is optional. You can stay in the glass-bottom boat and watch the glow from above β€” it's still spectacular. The boat itself creates glowing trails as it moves through the water. However, most people who stay in the boat end up wanting to jump in once they see how beautiful it is up close.

Can children do this tour?

Yes. Children who can swim (or wear a life jacket) are welcome. The water is calm β€” it's a lagoon, not the ocean. There are no waves or currents. Children typically love it even more than adults. Life jackets are provided on the boat.

When does the tour run?

Only after dark β€” typically starting between 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM depending on the time of year. The glow is only visible in complete darkness. Tours run year-round. The experience is most intense during new moon phases when there's no competing moonlight, but it's clearly visible on any dark night.

How far is the Luminous Lagoon from Montego Bay?

About 30 minutes east of Montego Bay, on the outskirts of Falmouth town. Lift Taxi can collect you from your Montego Bay hotel and bring you back. It's also perfect for cruise passengers whose ship docks in Falmouth β€” the lagoon is literally 5 minutes from the pier.

Will my camera capture the glow?

Regular phone cameras struggle in low light. The best results come from phones with a good night mode (iPhone 14+, Pixel 7+) or dedicated cameras with manual ISO settings. Many guests simply put the phone down and experience it with their own eyes β€” there's no photo that does it justice anyway.
